Mariners Sign Brian Shaw

In a shortened season where anything can happen, the Mariners are taking what some see as a risk in a move to *literally* strengthen their bullpen.

According the reports, the team will be signing strongman Brian Shaw. The details of the deal are not yet known, but here’s what we know about Shaw: His nickname “Gigantor” is extremely appropriate, as he stands at 6’8” and 445 lbs. The intimidation factor will be off the charts when he walks out to the mound, and it’s pretty safe to say there’s a ton of power in those legs that will help him maximize velocity. While there is some concern that the bulky upper body could limit range of motion and make for a stiff delivery, there’s enough power there that it may not matter.

He only has one pitch, which he calls “pick up ball and throw ball hard,” but let’s be honest, you’re not getting much more than that from your standard 7th inning guy anyway. Regardless of experience on the mound, his accolades speak for themselves: he’s the first man to win both the Arnold Strongman Classic and the World’s Strongest Man competition in the same year, and he’s done it twice. Impressive.

It remains to be seen how this will work out, or if it will work at all, but it will certainly be worth watching. Give Dipoto and Co. credit for thinking outside the box.
